Your child's school in Canada or New Zealand: what it means for your career

Moving with your child for school? Here is exactly what a parent can and cannot do for work and study in Canada and New Zealand, and how to use the time well.

Many parents who move abroad with a school-age child ask the same question: "What happens to my own career?" The honest answer is that your child's school place gives you very few work rights. But with the right plan, the years abroad can still build your skills, your credentials and your family's long-term options.

This guide explains the official rules in Canada and New Zealand as they stand in September 2026. Then it shows realistic career strategies that stay inside those rules.

6 monthsCanada: remote work for a foreign employer as a visitor, at a timeStricter proof needed since 26 May 2026
0Canadian work permits a parent gets because their child is at school
3 monthsNew Zealand guardian: study allowed in any 12 monthsLonger only with permission
9:30–2:30NZ guardian: part-time work hours, weekdays, if conditions are varied
NZD 1,000NZ guardian: funds needed a monthNZD 400 if accommodation is prepaid

The basic rule: your child's visa is not your work visa

In both countries, the student visa belongs to your child. It lets them go to school. It does not give a parent permission to work for a local employer.

Think of it this way. Your child is the "main applicant" for study. You come along to care for them. Your permission to stay is built around that caring role, so it has tight limits.

Here is a simple example. Rahima is an accountant in Dhaka with eight years' experience. Her daughter, aged 11, gets a place at a public school board in Ontario. Rahima comes as a visitor. She cannot take a job at a Toronto accounting firm, even part-time. But she can keep working remotely for her Dhaka employer for a period, take short courses, and prepare her credentials. We will look at each of these below.

What an accompanying parent can and cannot do

CA
CanadaCanada: parent as a visitor

You usually come as a visitor. You can care for your child, but you cannot work for a Canadian employer.

Your status
Visitor (visitor visa or eTA)
Extend your stay
Apply for a visitor record, CAD 100
Remote work for a foreign employer
Up to 6 months at a time, with proof
Study
Courses of 6 months or less, no study permit
Work for a Canadian employer
Only with your own work permit
  • Children under 17 must come with a parent or legal guardian, or have a custodian in Canada who is a Canadian citizen or PR.
  • Since 26 May 2026, IRCC asks remote workers to prove their income is earned entirely outside Canada, for example with an employment letter, pay slips or foreign tax documents.
  • A visitor cannot apply for a work permit from inside Canada. The temporary policy that allowed this ended on 28 August 2024.
  • A visitor generally cannot apply for a study permit from inside Canada either. One exception: people who finished a short course that was a condition of admission to a college or university.

A note on the Canadian spousal work permit

You may have read about Canada's changes to the spousal open work permit (SOWP) in January 2025. Since 21 January 2025, only spouses and common-law partners of students in certain programmes can get one. These are master's degrees of 16 months or more, doctoral programmes, some professional degrees (such as medicine, law, nursing and engineering) and some pilot programmes.

This rule is about spouses of adult students. It does not apply to parents of school children, because parents of school children were never eligible for this permit in the first place. Your child's school place gives you no route to an open work permit. See the IRCC page on spouses of students.

Remote work: useful, but read the small print

Remote work is often the best way to keep your income and your career moving. But treat it carefully.

Canada

IRCC's instructions for "digital nomads" say a person working remotely for a foreign employer can stay as a visitor for up to six months at a time. Since 26 May 2026, officers expect proof that your income is earned entirely outside Canada. Acceptable evidence includes a foreign employment letter or contract, pay slips, service contracts and invoices, foreign business registration, foreign tax documents or bank statements. See the IRCC instructions on digital nomads.

If you plan to stay longer than your authorised stay, you must apply for a visitor record before your status ends. And you must not take clients or employers in Canada.

New Zealand

INZ says a guardian may be able to work remotely for an employer or client based outside New Zealand. You still cannot work for a New Zealand business without a variation of conditions.

Career strategy 1: study for yourself, within the rules

Study is the most common way parents turn these years into a career gain. There are three levels.

  1. 1
    Short courses first

In Canada, courses of 6 months or less need no study permit. In New Zealand, a guardian can study for up to 3 months in any 12 months. Use these for certificates in project management, data skills, English or your professional software.

  2. 2
Longer part-time study in New Zealand

If you want to study longer, apply to INZ to vary your conditions for part-time study. Wait for approval before you enrol.

  3. 3
Your own study permit in Canada

For a full diploma or degree you need your own study permit. As a visitor you generally must apply from outside Canada. Master's and doctoral students at public institutions have not needed a provincial attestation letter (PAL) since 1 January 2026.

  4. 4
Your own student visa in New Zealand

A parent can apply for their own student visa. But this changes the whole family's visa set-up, including who cares for the child. Get licensed advice before you do this.

Why a parent's own study permit can change things in Canada

If a parent holds a valid study permit or work permit, IRCC says a minor child already in Canada can study at school without their own study permit. See IRCC: minor children studying in Canada.

And if the parent's programme is on the approved list (for example, a master's of 16 months or more), their spouse may be eligible for an open work permit. So in some families, one parent studies, the other works and the children go to school. This is a big decision with big costs. Check every rule for your exact programme first.

After a qualifying programme, a graduate may be able to apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP). You can only receive a PGWP once. University graduates need Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) 7 in English or French. See IRCC: PGWP eligibility.

Career strategy 2: get your qualifications recognised early

Your degree and experience from home are valuable. But employers and regulators abroad need to understand them. Start this while your child settles in.

Canada: Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)

An ECA shows how your foreign degree compares to a Canadian one. It is required for most Express Entry immigration profiles. IRCC designates organisations such as World Education Services (WES), the International Credential Assessment Service of Canada and the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS). An ECA must be less than 5 years old when you use it. See IRCC: education assessed.

Some jobs are regulated in Canada, such as engineering, nursing, medicine, teaching and accounting. For these, you also need a licence from the provincial regulator. This can take a long time, so start early.

New Zealand: International Qualification Assessment (IQA)

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) runs the IQA. It compares your qualification to the New Zealand Qualifications Framework. Employers and INZ use it. See NZQA: International Qualification Assessment. Check the current fee and waiting time on the NZQA page before you apply.

Career strategy 3: build a network, not just a CV

You cannot work for a local employer, but you can learn how your industry works in that country.

  • Join professional associations as an overseas or student member, where they allow it.
  • Go to free public events, library workshops and industry meet-ups.
  • Volunteer only where it is clearly allowed for visitors. Unpaid work that would normally be a paid job can still count as "work". If unsure, don't.
  • Keep a simple log: people you met, what their company needs and which skills they asked about.
  • Keep your LinkedIn profile up to date, in plain English, with your home-country experience clearly explained.

This matters because many skilled migration routes value a job offer or local experience. You cannot get these while visiting. But knowing the market means you will be ready if you later apply through an official route.

Career strategy 4: look at skilled migration only through official routes

Some families later decide to apply to live in Canada or New Zealand. That is a separate process with its own rules. Your child's school place does not count towards it.

CA
CanadaCanada: Express Entry

A points-based system for skilled workers, run by IRCC.

  • IRCC runs category-based draws. In 2026 the categories include French-language proficiency, healthcare and social services, STEM, trades, education and transport.
  • Most 2026 categories now need at least 12 months of full-time work experience in the last 3 years.
  • Some new categories (physicians, senior managers and researchers) need that experience in Canada.
  • You need an ECA, a language test and a strong score. Invitations are never guaranteed.

Be careful of anyone who promises PR "through your child's school". There is no such route in either country.

How your child's education builds the family's long-term options

This is the part many parents forget. The real long-term value is often your child's education, not your own job.

  • University entry. A Canadian provincial diploma or New Zealand's National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) University Entrance gives your child a direct route to local universities.
  • English. Years in English-medium school often mean your child can meet university English requirements without extra tests. Each university sets its own rule.
  • Future options. If your child later studies at a local university, they may qualify for post-study work routes as an adult, under the rules that apply then.
  • Family knowledge. You will know the schools, costs, cities and job market first-hand before any big decision.

Money: plan as if you will earn nothing locally

The safest financial plan assumes you will earn no money from a local employer. Any remote income is a bonus, not the foundation.

In Canada, IRCC's proof of financial support figure for one student outside Quebec is CAD 23,448 a year for living costs (from 1 September 2026), on top of tuition and travel. You also need funds for your own stay as a visitor. Public school board tuition is often around CAD 14,000 to 20,000 a year, but each board sets its own fee.

In New Zealand, INZ's student fund requirements ask for NZD 17,000 a year for a school student's living costs, plus the tuition. The guardian needs NZD 1,000 a month, or NZD 400 a month if accommodation is already paid. That is NZD 12,000 a year for the parent alone, before rent in many cases.

Here is what this means in practice. If your remote job stops, or your employer changes its policy, your family must still be able to stay. So keep your savings separate from your monthly income. Show the officer that the plan works without local work. And never plan to "find something" after you arrive.

Three families, three realistic plans

Real plans look different for different families. Here are three examples, based on common situations. They are illustrations, not promises.

Example 1: the remote software developer

Tanvir is a software developer for a company in Dhaka. His son starts Grade 6 in British Columbia. His employer agrees in writing that he can work remotely. Tanvir enters Canada as a visitor, brings his employment letter, pay slips and tax records, and works for his Dhaka employer. He applies for a visitor record before his authorised stay ends. In the evenings he takes a short cloud computing course. He does not work for any Canadian client.

Example 2: the teacher who wants to study

Nasrin is a secondary school teacher. Her daughter, aged 9, starts Year 5 in Wellington. Nasrin holds the Guardian visa. She takes a 10-week English and teaching methods course, which fits inside the 3-month study limit. Later she applies to INZ to vary her conditions for part-time study. She only enrols once INZ approves. She also gets an NZQA assessment of her teaching degree, because teaching is a registered profession in New Zealand.

Example 3: the engineer who wants a new direction

Karim is a civil engineer. His two children start school in Ontario. He decides to apply for his own study permit for a 2-year master's at a public university. Because he is a visitor, he applies from outside Canada. His wife then checks whether she can apply for an open work permit as the spouse of a master's student. Before any of this, they pay for advice from a licensed consultant. Karim also knows that engineering is regulated in Canada, so a master's alone will not make him a licensed engineer.
