"Should my son study accounting abroad, or do ACCA in Dhaka?" "Is business analytics better than finance now that AI can do the numbers?" These are two of the questions we hear most from Bangladeshi families. The honest answer is that a finance career abroad is usually built from two pieces: a degree, and a professional qualification. This guide shows how the pieces fit, which countries list accounting jobs as in demand, and what to do from your starting point.
It is for students finishing HSC or A-levels, graduates with a degree in another subject, and people already working in accounts, audit or banking in Bangladesh.
How AI is changing this career
Finance is one of the clearest examples of AI changing a job rather than removing it. The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 lists FinTech engineers as the second fastest-growing role worldwide, while bank tellers and accounting, bookkeeping and payroll clerks are among the fastest declining.
What AI and automation are taking over:
- Bookkeeping, reconciliations and routine reports
- First-draft forecasts
- Flagging possible fraud in large sets of transactions
What stays human:
- Advising clients and leaders on what the numbers mean
- Professional judgement and sign-off, where someone is accountable
- Ethics and regulation
So choose a course that moves you towards judgement, not towards data entry. Look for modules in data analytics, SQL or Python, financial modelling and accounting standards, and a professional-body link. For a wider view, read what to study in the age of AI.
The pathway map: find your starting point
Meet three students. Tanvir has just finished HSC in business studies with good results in accounting and maths. Nusrat has a BSc in Economics from a Dhaka university and IELTS 6.5. Arif is a part-qualified ICAB chartered accountancy student with three years in an audit firm in Motijheel. They need different routes.
- After HSC or A-levels: a bachelor’s in accounting, finance, commerce or business analytics. Pick one accredited by the professional body you want, so you collect exam exemptions while you study.
- After a bachelor’s in another subject: a one- or two-year master’s. Conversion master’s in professional accounting are built for non-accountants; MSc Finance and MSc Business Analytics suit graduates with strong maths.
- Already working or part-qualified: you may not need a new degree at all. The questions are which body’s membership you can transfer, and which exams you still need.
| Destination | After HSC or A-levels | After a bachelor's in another subject | Already working or part-qualified |
|---|---|---|---|
| UKUnited Kingdom | 3-year BSc Accounting and Finance; check ACCA or ICAEW exemptions | 1-year MSc in Accounting, Finance or Business Analytics | Continue ACCA; ICAB members can apply to join ICAEW |
| AUAustralia | 3-year Bachelor of Commerce with an accredited accounting major | Master of Professional Accounting (accredited by CPA Australia and CA ANZ) | CPA Australia lists streamlined pathways for ICAB, ACCA, ICAEW and CIMA members |
| NZNew Zealand | 3-year Bachelor of Commerce, accounting major | Postgraduate accounting or finance master's | CA ANZ covers New Zealand as well as Australia |
| CACanada | 4-year BCom or BBA in accounting, then the CPA programme | Master's in accounting, finance or analytics | CPA Canada has agreements with some overseas bodies; others are assessed case by case |
| USUnited States | 4-year bachelor's in accounting, then the CPA exam through a state board | Master of Accountancy, MS Finance or MS Business Analytics | State boards evaluate foreign education; rules differ by state |
| IEIreland | 3–4 year BComm or BA in Accounting and Finance | 1-year MSc in Accounting, Finance or Business Analytics | Professional bodies such as ACCA and Chartered Accountants Ireland |
| DEGermany | Mostly German-taught bachelor's degrees | English-taught MSc Finance or Business Analytics at some universities | German needed for most accounting jobs |
| MYMalaysia | Accounting degree with ACCA exemptions, at lower cost | Master's in finance or analytics | A study base, not a work route: no Graduate Pass for Bangladeshis |
Tanvir: after HSC
Tanvir’s best move is a bachelor’s that is accredited by the professional body he will use later. ACCA says a maximum of nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams can be exempted, but no Strategic Professional exams. A degree that earns the full nine exemptions can save him a year or more of exams after graduation. He should check every shortlisted course in ACCA’s exemptions calculator before he applies, and remember that ACCA charges a fee for each exemption.
If he leans towards Australia, he should check that the degree is accredited by CPA Australia and CA ANZ. That matters twice: once for joining the professional body, and again if he ever needs a migration skills assessment as an accountant.
Nusrat: after a bachelor’s in economics
Nusrat does not need to start again. She has two good options:
- A conversion master’s in accounting, such as Australia’s Master of Professional Accounting, which is designed to cover the subjects professional bodies require. CA ANZ, for example, lists required areas including financial accounting, management accounting, audit, tax, business law and finance.
- An MSc in Finance or Business Analytics, if she enjoys maths and coding more than accounting standards. These suit roles such as financial analyst, business analyst or risk analyst.
Her main tasks are to compare which modules each master’s gives exemptions for, and to lift her English if a course asks for more than 6.5. Use our IELTS level check first.
Arif: already part-qualified in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, the Chartered Accountant title comes from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB). ICAB has a long-standing agreement with ICAEW, and ICAEW publishes a route for ICAB members to join ICAEW. CPA Australia also lists ICAB among the bodies whose members may get a streamlined pathway to its membership.
For Arif, finishing ICAB membership first may open more doors than a new master’s abroad. A master’s can still help if he wants to move into analytics, FinTech or corporate finance, but he should ask each professional body in writing what his ICAB record gives him before he pays for more study. If you studied part of a degree already, see how credit transfer works.
Accounting, finance or analytics: which lane?
The three lanes share a lot, so you can move between them later. But the degree you pick shapes your first job.
- Accounting leads to audit associate, tax and reporting roles. It is the lane where a professional qualification matters most, and where exemptions save the most time.
- Finance leads to financial analyst, corporate finance and banking roles. Strong maths, modelling and clear writing matter more than any one certificate at the start.
- Business analytics leads to business analyst and data roles inside companies. Employers look for SQL, dashboards and the ability to explain numbers to managers who are not experts.
A typical ladder looks like this: a first role as an analyst or audit associate; after three to five years, senior analyst, chartered accountant or planning lead; later, finance manager or analytics director. Whichever lane you choose, the people who move up fastest are the ones who can explain what the numbers mean.
Where this career is in demand
We checked each country’s official shortage or priority list on 1 October 2026. A job on a list does not guarantee a visa, but it usually means more employers can sponsor you and, in some countries, a faster route to residence.
| Country | Official list status | What is listed |
|---|---|---|
| AUAustralia | Listed | Accountant (General) and ICT Business Analyst are on the Core Skills Occupation List |
| IEIreland | Listed | Accountants and business analysts with listed specialisms, on the Critical Skills Occupations List |
| MTMalta | Listed | Accountants and financial analysts, on Malta's skilled occupation list |
| USUnited States | Faster than average | Management analysts +10%, financial analysts +7%, accountants and auditors +5% (2025–35; average 3%) |
| UKUnited Kingdom | Not on a shortage list | Graduate roles usually qualify for a Skilled Worker visa anyway |
| DEGermany | Partly | Accounting and audit specialists are shortage jobs; most also need German |
| NZNew Zealand | Partly | External auditors only, on the Green List |
| CACanada | Not prioritised | Not in a 2026 Express Entry priority category |
Two points for families. First, Australia is the strongest match on paper, but an accounting skills assessment checks your degree against required subjects, so choose an accredited course from the start. Second, Canada does not currently prioritise accounting or finance jobs for permanent residence. That does not make Canada a bad place to study business, but it should not be your main reason for choosing it.
Business analytics sits between two careers. In Australia, ICT Business Analyst is listed separately from Accountant (General), and in the US, operations research analysts are projected to grow 12% from 2025 to 2035. Analytics skills widen your options in both directions.
Professional bodies: which one, and when?
You do not need to choose your professional body at 17, but you should know the main ones. Most need exams plus about three years of supervised work.
- ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants): global, widely taken in Bangladesh, Malaysia and the UK. Membership needs exams, an Ethics and Professional Skills module and at least 36 months of supervised practical experience. A redesigned ACCA Qualification launches in September 2027; ACCA says students part-way through will receive credit for their progress.
- CIMA (CGMA designation): management accounting, for finance roles inside companies. It asks for at least three years of verified relevant experience, and gives exemptions for accredited degrees. Check the CIMA exemptions calculator.
- ICAEW (ACA): the chartered accountancy qualification of England and Wales. ICAEW says ACA students complete 450 days of practical work experience with an authorised training employer, usually over three to five years, alongside exam modules.
- CPA Australia: four compulsory and two elective subjects, plus 36 months of experience. If your degree is not accredited, you take foundation exams first.
- CA ANZ: covers Australia and New Zealand. The CA Program includes a Graduate Diploma of Chartered Accounting and three years of mentored practical experience. Entry needs an accredited degree or one that covers its required competency areas.
- CPA Canada: provincial bodies run the CPA programme. CPA Canada has recognition agreements with some overseas bodies, including ICAEW and CA ANZ. Check whether your body is on the current list.
- US CPA: there is no national licence. Each state board of accountancy licenses CPAs. The model rules now allow three routes: a graduate degree plus one year of experience; 150 semester hours plus one year; or a bachelor’s in accounting (120 hours) plus two years of experience. States adopt the new route at different times.
Country by country
The strongest demand signal for accountants among our ten countries.
- Demand
- Accountant (General) and ICT Business Analyst on the Core Skills Occupation List
- Professional bodies
- CPA Australia, CA ANZ
- After study
- Temporary Graduate visa, 2–3 years (age limit 35)
- Choose a degree accredited by CPA Australia and CA ANZ. Both also run migration skills assessments for accounting jobs.
- Bangladeshi offshore student visa grants fell to 81.6% in late 2025, so a strong, genuine study plan matters.
Your plan from now to your first job
- 1NowChoose your lane
Accounting (audit, tax, reporting), finance (analysis, banking, investment) or analytics (data, dashboards, modelling). They overlap, but courses differ.
- 212–15 months beforeShortlist accredited courses
For each course, check which professional body accredits it and how many exemptions it gives.
- 310–12 months beforeFix your English and maths
Book IELTS early and refresh your maths. Analytics and finance master's often look closely at quantitative marks.
- 4During your degreeRegister as a student member
Join ACCA, CIMA or another body as a student, so exemptions are recorded and you can start exams early.
- 5Final yearBuild real experience
Look for internships, placements and graduate schemes. Learn Excel modelling, SQL and one dashboard tool well.
- 6First jobLog your supervised experience
Most bodies need about three years of recorded, supervised experience. Start logging it from day one.
1What is the most ACCA exams an accredited degree can exempt you from?
2Who licenses CPAs in the United States?
3Which country lists Accountant (General) on its core skills list?
4Arif is a part-qualified ICAB student. What should he check first?
A note for parents
Accounting and finance can be a steady, respected career, but the full journey is longer than the degree. Plan for the degree, then about three years of supervised work and professional exams while your child works. The good news: they are earning during those three years, and the qualification travels with them.
When you compare courses, ask three questions: Which professional body accredits it? How many exams does it exempt? And where did recent international graduates find work? Clear answers are a good sign.
