Which courses match the skills countries say they need? (2026)

Many students choose a course hoping it will lead to work after graduation. Governments publish lists of the skills they are short of, and it makes sense to look at them before you choose.

Read this first: a shortage list is not a promise. Lists change every year, most routes also need work experience, language scores and a job offer, and no course guarantees a visa or permanent residence. Treat these lists as one signal among several, alongside your interests, your grades and your budget. This article is general information, not immigration advice. Canada: Express Entry categories for 2026

Canada invites some skilled workers through "category-based" rounds. In February 2026, it renewed these categories:

Health care and social services
Education
STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths), back after it was dropped in 2025
Trades
French-language proficiency

It also added new categories for physicians, researchers and senior managers (each with Canadian work experience), transport, and skilled military recruits. For the renewed categories, the minimum recent work experience rose from 6 months to 1 year. That's a reminder that the course is only the first step.

Australia: the Core Skills Occupation List

Australia's Core Skills Occupation List is used for the Core Skills stream of the Skills in Demand visa. It covers 456 occupations, including:

Software Engineer and Data Scientist
Registered Nurse (several specialties)
Civil Engineer
Accountant (General)
Secondary School Teacher and Early Childhood Teacher
Electrician, Motor Mechanic and Chef

Germany: EU Blue Card shortage fields

Germany's EU Blue Card has a lower salary threshold for shortage occupations and for recent graduates: €45,934.20 in 2026, against a standard €50,700. Shortage fields include:

STEM graduates, IT and engineering
Physicians, pharmacists and nursing professionals
Educators

Many of these jobs need good German, even when the degree is taught in English. Start learning early.

United Kingdom: the bar went up in 2025

From 22 July 2025, the UK's Skilled Worker visa generally requires jobs at degree level (RQF 6), following the statement of changes HC 997. Some mid-skill occupations are covered for a limited time by temporary lists, which are due to end or be reviewed. The practical message: in the UK, plan for a graduate-level job in your field, and use the Graduate Route period to get there.

How to use this when choosing a course

Start with what you want to do, then check whether it appears on the lists. Don't do it the other way round. A course you dislike is hard to finish well.
Check that the course leads to registration where the job needs it (nursing, teaching, engineering and law often do).
Prefer courses with work experience built in: co-op, placements, practicums.
