"When should I start?" The honest answer, for most students aiming at September 2027, is: now. It is 1 October 2026. Some of the most important deadlines for 2027 entry are already weeks away, and visa, scholarship and English-test steps all take longer than families expect.
This guide is for HSC and A-level students, graduates and parents in Bangladesh planning to start abroad in 2027. It sets out the main intakes country by country, the officially published deadlines, and a month-by-month plan you can follow from today until you land.
Start with the career, then the country, then the course
A timeline only helps once you know where you are going. If you haven't chosen yet, spend the first two weeks on that: pick the career you want, check where it is in demand, then shortlist countries and courses. Our career guides and the country chooser are built for exactly this step.
Three students we will follow through this guide:
- Rafi (HSC, Dhaka) wants a UK bachelor's in computer science from September 2027.
- Tasnim (BSc graduate, Rajshahi) wants a master's in public health in Australia, aiming for July 2027.
- Imran (BSc in electrical engineering, Khulna) is considering a free-tuition master's in Germany for winter semester 2027.
The main intakes, country by country
| Country | Main intakes | When to apply (official guidance) |
|---|---|---|
| UKUnited Kingdom | September (main); some universities also start courses in January | UCAS undergraduate: 13 January 2027 for most courses; 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine and dentistry. Postgraduate: apply direct, deadlines vary by course. |
| CACanada | September; many colleges also start in January and May | Set by each institution. Most students need a provincial attestation letter (PAL/TAL), usually after accepting the offer and paying a deposit. |
| AUAustralia | Semester 1 (February or March) and Semester 2 (July) | Set by each provider. Applications for mid-year entry usually open around April. |
| USUnited States | Fall (August/September) and spring (January) | Set by each university. Graduate deadlines often fall in the winter before fall entry. |
| DEGermany | Winter semester (from September/October) and summer semester (from March/April) | Often 15 July for winter and 15 January for summer, but many master's courses close earlier. |
| NZNew Zealand | Semester 1 (late February or early March) and Semester 2 (July) | Set by each university. Student visa processing is busiest between October and March. |
| IEIreland | Mostly September (check each course) | Most Irish institutions ask you to apply directly through their own website. Deadlines vary by course. |
| MYMalaysia | Several intakes a year at many universities | Set by each university, which also files your EMGS student pass application. |
UK: two UCAS dates matter
For 2027 entry, UCAS says completed applications could be sent from 1 September 2026. The equal-consideration deadline for most undergraduate courses is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. For Oxford, Cambridge and most courses in medicine, dentistry and veterinary science, it is 15 October 2026 (UCAS). Applications received by 30 June 2027 are still sent to universities, but after the January date they do not have to consider you equally, and popular courses may be full.
Rafi's plan: aim to submit in November or December 2026, well before 13 January, so his school reference and predicted grades are not rushed.
Germany: the deadline is not the problem, the visa queue is
uni-assist says application deadlines are often 15 July for the winter semester and 15 January for the summer semester, and advises applying at least 8 weeks before the deadline. It usually sends an evaluation result in 4 to 6 weeks (uni-assist).
But for Bangladeshi applicants, the bigger issue is the visa. The German Embassy Dhaka says the current waiting time for a student visa is more than 27 months. PhD students and students with German or European scholarships are processed straight after registration. The Embassy asks other bachelor's and master's applicants to think about whether a wait of this length fits their plans (German Embassy Dhaka).
Imran's plan: a winter 2027 start is unrealistic without a qualifying scholarship. He is applying for scholarships first, and keeping a second country on his list.
Australia and New Zealand: two starts a year
Study Australia says students can usually start in Semester 1 (February or March) or Semester 2 (July), and that applications for mid-year entry usually open around April (Study Australia). New Zealand follows a similar pattern. Immigration NZ says it processes 80% of fee-paying student visas within 8 weeks, and that October to March is its busiest period (Immigration NZ).
Tasnim's plan: July 2027 gives her time to get her IELTS score and documents ready. She applies to universities by February 2027, so she has her offer and Confirmation of Enrolment in time to lodge her visa.
English tests: book early, leave room for a retake
Your English score is often the last document students get, and it can hold up everything else. IELTS says results are usually available within 1 to 5 days of the test (IELTS), but test dates in Dhaka can fill up.
- Take your first test at least 4 to 6 months before your first application deadline. That leaves time for a second attempt.
- Check the exact score each university asks for, and for each band, not just the overall.
- Check how old a result can be. Universities and visa authorities each set their own limit.
Our English test page explains which tests each country accepts and how to prepare.
Scholarships: often the earliest deadline of all
Many scholarships close before universities do. One example: Chevening applications usually close in early October, almost a year before the course starts (deadline for the 2027–28 round: 6 October 2026, 11:00 UTC). Interviews take place in March to April 2027, results come from mid-June 2027, and successful candidates must submit an unconditional UK university offer by 8 July 2027 (Chevening).
University scholarships often have their own earlier deadline, or only consider students who apply by a certain date. In the USA, graduate assistantships are usually decided by the department alongside your admission. Start your scholarship list 12 months ahead, and read our scholarships guide.
How long visas take
| Country | Official timing guidance |
|---|---|
| UKUnited Kingdom | Apply up to 6 months before your course starts. Decisions usually within 3 weeks from outside the UK. |
| CACanada | Processing times vary by country; check IRCC's processing-time tool. Get your PAL/TAL first. |
| AUAustralia | Use Home Affairs' processing-time guide. Apply with enough time before your course starts. |
| USUnited States | F-1 visas can be issued up to 365 days before your programme start date. You can enter the US up to 30 days before it. |
| NZNew Zealand | 80% of fee-paying student visas decided within 8 weeks. Busiest October to March. |
| DEGermany | Waiting time at the German Embassy Dhaka: more than 27 months. Around 4 weeks once your application is submitted. |
| MYMalaysia | Your university submits your student pass application to EMGS after you accept your offer. |

Your month-by-month plan for September 2027
This is the plan for a September or October 2027 start (UK, Canada, USA, Ireland, Germany's winter semester). For a February or July start in Australia or New Zealand, move every step 5 to 7 months earlier or later to match.
- 112 months before (September–October 2026)Choose career, country and course
Decide your career goal, then use the country chooser to shortlist two or three countries. Note every deadline, including scholarships such as Chevening (2027–28 deadline: 6 October 2026) and UCAS's 15 October date for Oxford, Cambridge and medicine.
- 211–10 months before (October–November 2026)English test and documents
Sit IELTS or another accepted test. Collect certificates, transcripts, passport and references. Start your statement of purpose or personal statement.
- 310–8 months before (November 2026–January 2027)Apply to universities and scholarships
Submit applications. UK undergraduates: send your UCAS application before 13 January 2027. Many US graduate and scholarship deadlines fall in this window.
- 48–6 months before (January–March 2027)Plan your funds
Start the bank history your visa needs: the UK wants money held for 28 days, Canada and Ireland look at six months of statements. Read our proof of funds guide.
- 56–4 months before (March–May 2027)Accept an offer and pay the deposit
Compare offers, read the refund policy, and accept one. Ask for your CAS, I-20, CoE or acceptance letter, and in Canada your PAL/TAL. Germany (winter semester): applications often close on 15 July, and many master's courses close earlier.
- 64–2 months before (May–July 2027)Apply for your visa
Apply as soon as you are allowed: up to 6 months before for the UK, as soon as you have your documents for Canada and Australia. Prepare for your credibility interview.
- 72–1 months before (July–August 2027)Book travel and accommodation
Book flights only after your visa is approved. Arrange housing, health insurance and your first month's money.
- 8Arrival (August–September 2027)Land and enrol
In the USA you can enter up to 30 days before your programme start date. In the UK, not before the start date on your visa. Register with your university and the local authorities.
Is it too late for January or February 2027?
Not always, but it is tight. A January 2027 start in the UK, Canada or the USA, or a February/March 2027 start in Australia or New Zealand, is about 4 to 5 months away. It can work if you already have your English score, your funds are in place with enough history, and you choose a university that still has places. If any of those is missing, the July or September 2027 intake is usually the safer choice, and gives you time to apply for scholarships.
You still have time for September 2027, but only if you start now. Book a call with an adviser to build your plan.
