IELTS One Skill Retake: which countries and universities accept it (2026)

You got IELTS 6.5 overall, but Writing came back at 5.5 and your offer needs 6.0 in every band. IELTS One Skill Retake lets you resit only Writing, without paying for and sitting all four parts again. It sounds perfect, but it only helps if your university and your visa both accept the new result.

This guide explains how One Skill Retake (OSR) works, who accepts it for visas in our 10 destinations, which universities we have confirmed on their own websites, and when a full retake is the safer choice.

What IELTS One Skill Retake is

One Skill Retake is an official IELTS option. After a full IELTS test, you can retake one of the four skills instead of the whole test. The format and timing of that skill are the same as in a full test.

How the new result looks

IELTS tells universities that the new TRF shows the test type as IELTS One Skill Retake, marks the retaken skill clearly, and adds details in the administrator comments (IELTS for organisations). So an admissions officer will always know it is a retake. That is why acceptance matters: a university that does not accept OSR will simply ignore the new TRF.

What if your retake score is lower?

Your original TRF stays valid. IELTS says you can use either the original TRF or the new one. So a lower retake score does not cancel your first result. But be careful: some universities ask for all your test results, or for your latest one. For example, Queen Mary University of London says it will "normally only accept the latest results" of an English test (QMUL). The University of Waterloo asks applicants who took several tests to submit results for each test (Waterloo). Read your university's rule before you assume you can hide a weaker retake.

Is it available in Bangladesh?

Yes, at some centres. When we checked in September 2026, the IDP IELTS Bangladesh test finder had an "Only show One Skill Retake centres" filter, and its Dhanmondi centre listed One Skill Retake as available for IELTS on computer sessions, including IELTS for UKVI (IDP IELTS Bangladesh test dates). IELTS says OSR prices vary by country. The full IELTS on computer fee in Bangladesh was listed at BDT 31,100, and IELTS for UKVI at BDT 34,850 (IDP IELTS Bangladesh fees). We could not find a clearly published OSR fee, so check the current price in the booking system or with the British Council or IDP before you pay.

Visa acceptance: who decides in each country

There are two separate questions:

1. Does the immigration authority accept OSR when it asks for an English test?
2. Does your university accept OSR for admission?

In many countries the student visa does not set its own English test. The university checks your English, and the visa officer relies on the university's offer. In those countries, question 2 is the one that matters.

Country by country

Universities that confirm their policy

Every university decides for itself. Here are examples we confirmed on each university's own English requirements page in September 2026. Policies change, so re-check before you book.

What the pattern tells you

Two patterns stand out. First, acceptance is strongest in Australia and New Zealand, where the immigration authorities themselves accept OSR and many universities follow. Second, Canada is the most cautious: several large universities require all scores from one sitting, and IRCC rejects OSR for Express Entry. The UK is mixed, so you must check each university one by one.

Acceptance can also differ inside one university. UWA accepts OSR for most courses but not for courses with professional accreditation rules. A university may also treat undergraduate and postgraduate applications differently, or change its policy for a new intake. That is why a written answer from admissions for your exact course and intake is worth more than a general statement on a forum or a friend's experience.

How to check a university yourself

1. Open the university's English language requirements page. Search the page (Ctrl+F) for "One Skill", "retake", "single sitting" and "one test". Phrases like "in one sitting" or "on a single date" usually mean no OSR.
2. Check the course page too. Professional courses such as medicine, nursing, teaching and law often have stricter rules.
3. Use the IELTS "Who accepts IELTS?" search at IELTS.org. It lists organisations and indicative scores. IELTS says organisations that choose to accept OSR have this shown on its website, but the profiles we checked did not always make OSR status clear. Treat it as a starting point only.
4. Email admissions and ask: "Do you accept IELTS One Skill Retake for [course], [intake]?" Keep the reply.

One Skill Retake or a full retake?

OSR is cheaper and shorter, but it is not always the smart choice.

When OSR makes sense

• Only one band is below the requirement, and by half a band or one band.
• Your university and your visa route both accept OSR.
• You can sit the retake within 60 days and still meet your offer or CAS deadline (CAS means Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, the UK document your university issues for your visa).

When a full retake is safer

• Two or more bands are low. OSR fixes only one skill.
• Your university says "single sitting", "one test" or "on a single date".
• You need the result for Canada's Express Entry, or you may need it later for a PGWP.
• Your original test was on paper, or more than 60 days have passed.
• You are applying to several universities and at least one does not accept OSR.

A worked example

Rahim from Dhaka took IELTS Academic on computer and scored Listening 7.0, Reading 6.5, Writing 5.5 and Speaking 6.5. That gives an overall band of 6.5. His offer from the University of Queensland needs 6.5 overall with 6.0 in every band, so Writing is the problem. UQ accepts OSR, and Australia's Home Affairs accepts OSR. After four weeks of writing practice, he takes a Writing retake and scores 6.0. His new TRF shows 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0.

If Rahim were also applying to the University of Toronto, the same OSR result would not count there. He would need a full test for Toronto.

Timing: offers, CAS and visa deadlines

OSR saves time only if you plan it. Work backwards from your deadline.

• Days 1–5: full test results arrive (IELTS on computer).
• Within 60 days of the full test: you must sit the retake.
• 3–5 days after the retake: you receive the new TRF.
• Then: the university must receive and check it before it can make your offer unconditional or issue your CAS, Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) in Australia, or I-20 in the US.

If your deposit, CAS or visa appointment deadline is close, do not wait until day 55 to book. Seats at OSR centres can fill up. Also think about validity: most universities accept tests up to 2 years old, but they count from different dates. UTS counts an OSR result from the retake date, while the University of Auckland counts from the date on the test certificate.

Preparing for your one skill

A retake only helps if your score actually goes up. Many students book OSR the day after their results, change nothing and get the same band again. Use the weeks before your retake to fix the exact reason you lost marks.

Writing

Writing is the skill most Bangladeshi students retake. Examiners mark four things: task response, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, and grammar. If you scored 5.5, the usual problems are an unclear position in Task 2, paragraphs without a main idea, and repeated grammar errors. Write one full Task 1 and one full Task 2 under timed conditions every week, and ask a trained teacher to mark them against the public band descriptors. Count your words: writing under the minimum costs marks.

Speaking

For Speaking, record yourself answering Part 2 cue cards for two minutes. Listen back for long pauses, simple repeated words and answers that are too short. Practise extending your answers with a reason and an example. Fluency often improves faster than grammar, so daily practice matters more than long weekly sessions.

Listening and Reading

For Listening and Reading, the score depends on correct answers, so mistakes are easier to find. Review every wrong answer and write down why you missed it: spelling, a trap word, running out of time or not reading the question. On computer, practise typing answers and moving between questions quickly.

Test-day tips

The retake is the same format and timing as that skill in a full test, but it can feel like more pressure because everything rests on one paper. Sleep well, arrive early and treat it like any other practice test. If you cannot reach the band you need in the time you have, it may be better to move to a later intake than to rush.
