The road to a master's or PhD scholarship: what to do, and when

Most students start looking for scholarships after they get an offer. By then, many of the best deadlines have already passed. Fully funded awards for a master's or PhD are usually won 12 to 18 months before you travel, by people who planned early and built the right evidence.

This guide gives you the timeline, explains how funding works, lists the major schemes in our 10 destinations, and shows you how to build a strong profile, including an email you can adapt for a PhD supervisor.

How fully funded scholarships actually work

"Fully funded" usually means the award pays your tuition fees and gives you a monthly living allowance (a stipend). Many also pay flights, visa costs and health insurance. There are three main types.

1. Government awards

A government pays for you to study, often to build links with your country. Examples are Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships (UK), Fulbright (US), Australia Awards and DAAD (Germany). These awards look for leadership and a plan to make an impact at home. Some ask you to return home after your studies. Chevening, for example, requires you to return to your home country for at least two years after the award ends (Chevening eligibility).

2. University awards

Universities give their own scholarships. Many are partial, such as a 20–50% fee discount. Some fully funded university awards exist, especially for research degrees. You are usually considered when you apply for the course, so apply early.

3. Funded research degrees (PhDs and research master's)

In the US, Canada, Australia and many other countries, a PhD is often funded through a research or teaching assistantship. You work about 15–20 hours a week for your department, and in return you get a tuition waiver and a stipend. EducationUSA says this is very common at PhD level, and that professors in your department play an important role in choosing who gets funding. That is why emailing supervisors matters so much.

Your 12–18 month roadmap

Here is the order that works for most students. Dates assume you want to start in September or October 2027.

   Choose between a taught master's, a research master's or a PhD. Write one sentence about the problem you want to work on. Check your CGPA (cumulative grade point average) against each scheme's minimum.

   Most schemes need IELTS or an equivalent. Australia Awards for Bangladesh, for example, asks for IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0. Take the test early so you can retake it. Use our IELTS level check.

   12–14 months before (summer 2026)Shortlist 6–10 awards and courses

   List deadlines, eligibility, references needed and whether you need an offer first. Government schemes open between February and October. Save each official page.

   12 months beforeContact supervisors (PhD)

   Email 8–15 potential supervisors with a short research idea. A supervisor who supports you can nominate you for funded places.

   11–12 months before (Aug–Oct 2026)Write and submit the big applications

   Chevening closes on 6 October 2026 and Commonwealth on 20 October 2026. Most DAAD EPOS course deadlines fall between August and October. Write each essay fresh, for that scheme.

   Chevening interviews run from March to April 2027. Prepare with mock interviews. Accept offers only after checking every condition.

The table below covers the biggest options for students from Bangladesh and South Asia. Always check the official page, because eligibility changes each year.

How to build a winning profile

Scholarship panels look for three things: academic strength, evidence of impact, and a clear plan. Here is how to build each one.

CGPA and grades

Your CGPA is the first filter. For example, the Malaysia International Scholarship asks for at least 3.00. A student with a 3.2 CGPA can still win, but the rest of the profile must be strong. If your CGPA is lower, show an upward trend (better grades in the final years) or strong results in the modules closest to your planned course.

Research and publications

For PhD awards, research experience matters more than almost anything else. A final-year thesis, a conference paper or a co-authored journal article all count. You do not need many. One real piece of research you can explain well is better than a long list.

Leadership and impact

Government awards want future leaders. Think of times you led a team, started a project or changed something at work or in your community. Use numbers: "trained 40 farmers", "cut processing time by 30%".

References

Choose referees who know your work well, not the most senior person you have met. Give them your CV, your essays and the deadline. Check each scheme's rules for when references are due. Some are due after your own deadline, but not all.

A research proposal (PhD and research master's)

A good proposal is 1,000–2,000 words. It states the problem, what is already known, your question, your method and why it matters. Match it to the supervisor's work.

Emailing supervisors

This is the step most students skip. A short, specific email gets replies. A long, general one does not.

Keep it under 200 words. Mention one specific paper. Attach your CV and a one-page idea. Send one email per professor, never a group email. If there is no reply after two weeks, send one polite follow-up.

Essays

Answer the exact question. Use one clear example per paragraph. Show what you did, what changed and what you learned. Then link it to your future plan. For more help, read our guides on the statement of purpose and the study plan.
